It may seem like a big step getting behind the wheel of a car for the
first time, not to mention preparing for your theory test, but with the right instructor alongside you there's absolutely
nothing to worry about.
You'll be driven to a quiet road where you will be taught about the various controls. Your instructor will then help you
to move the car off and stop again.
Don't
forget, your instructor will have dual controls, which means the pedals
are repeated on the passenger side enabling them to take control
of the vehicle if required.
As you progress, you will gain confidence in handling the car and learn the correct way to complete all the necessary manoeuvres necessary to pass your practical test.
Before you start...
Before
you climb into the driving seat on a public road you must hold a provisional
licence and be 17 years old. You can apply for a licence up to two
months before before your birthday on form D1, available from post
offices. If you haven't quite reached your 17th birthday you can
still prepare yourself by reading the Highway Code and, if you're
really keen, any number of books from our recommended
selection.
To
get the licence, your physical and mental health must be good. If
you list any health problems on the form, you may receive a further
questionnaire which asks permission for the DVLA to contact your doctor
for more details.
Your
eyesight should also be good. You should be able to read a number
plate from 20.5 metres (67 feet) away. If you need to wear glasses
or contact lenses to enable you to do this, they must be worn at all
times whenever you drive. |
